1 Year Old - Encore

Look Who's One!

Wow... the past 12 months have passed with what seems like the blink of an eye. Mom and Dad couldn't be more proud of Cole and all that he has accomplished this past year. Cole has made so much progress in this last month leading up to the big O-N-E and is entering toddler hood with a bang!

The big news this past month is that Cole is officially walking! Having successfully mastered crawling and cruisin’, Cole took his first steps in the final weeks before his first birthday. What started as a few off balance steps that looked a little more like "falling forward" has turned into a more confident stride (always with hand stretched outward for balance). Cole is trying out his new method of transportation whenever possible with the full knowledge that if needed crawling will get him where he needs to go very quickly.

Cole also continues to be a good eater. While his chosen diet would be comprised of bananas and strawberries, he pacifies Mom and Dad by also eating (or at least trying) just about everything. He likes the basics from meatloaf and macaroni and cheese to a bit more exotic with avocados and cous cous. Cole has been practicing with a spoon and between that and his little hands, he’s very self sufficient at meal times. Cole is getting better and better at drinking out of a cup (yes, a real cup) too. He gets his formula in a bottle, but all other liquids are out of a big-boy cup.

Cole has begun to pick up on the sign language that his teachers at school along with Mom and Dad have been using to help ease the language barrier. He often uses sign language to let us know when he’s "all done" eating or sometimes signs "dog" when he’s looking at Cooper. He also knows what Mom and Dad mean when we sign "water", "diaper change", "bottle", "more" and "thank you". Although there are plenty of times when it is pretty clear when he has had enough of his bottle or doesn’t want his diaper changed with or without sign language.

Below is a retrospective look back at the year that was... Cole's first.

We can’t wait to head into the next year and can only hope that it holds as much joy as this one did... and as always, here is a look back at how the little man has grown these past 365 days.

Splish Splash

Sorry for the lack of updates. We are preparing for the big 1 year b-day bash. There are bound to be tons of stuff to see in the upcoming weeks (including the walking video).

In the meantime, here are some bath time shots taken over the weekend. Cole has really taken to the bath now and loves to play in the water.

First Steps

Cole caught Mom and Dad off guard today by taking his first steps. While we have no photographic or video evidence you, dear reader, will need to simply take this one on faith (kinda like Nessie).

As you can see from the most recent posts Cole has just started standing on his own and walking freely with the help of a scooter / walker. This morning, during the daily drop off routine at school which includes playing with Dad for about 30 min, Cole seemed to miscalculate the distance between the table he was using to cruise around with and the gate that opens into the snack area. When Cole went to attempt a transition from one static object to another (as he has been doing more of recently) he ended up taking 3 good steps all on his own before he reached his destination. Both Cole and Dad were shocked and exchanged a "what just happened" look between them. Dad immediately tried to coax Cole into repeating the task but the deed was done and Cole was focused on new things.

Cole then waited all day (until Mom arrived to pick him up) to show off his new trick again. As Mom spent time with him while gathering his things, Cole took two steps toward her before loosing his balance and dropping to his knees.

What a day... and what a blessing that both Mom and Dad were able to see Cole explore his new found balance and skill.

Knowing Cole, he will most likely keep practicing on his own time and won't pull the new trick out for a while... But when he does we will have the camera at the ready.

Weekend Walker

This past week at school, Cole began to spread his walking wings a bit. Over the past few months he has really been improving on his "crusin" (walking with the help of a static object - couch, ottoman, table etc)... and to be honest, he has gotten pretty good. This past week he took it a "step" further by starting to walk with the help of a walker or high back scooter. After seeing him do this at school, Cole's folks couldn't let a weekend go by without allowing him to continue his "training". So off to the Toys R Us to pick up the necessary equipment before starting the Two-A-Days (always remembering to hydrate)

Click below to see a video of Cole's workouts this past weekend.

Standing Tall

This past week Cole took another "step" towards taking his first "steps". After months of pulling himself up and "crusin" around the house and school, Cole seems to be confident that he has found a bit of balance and has started letting go of his security item (couch, table, refrigerator etc) and standing all by himself. This act now allows Cole two free hands to grab, rip, shake or in today's case - removing all the magnets on the fridge.

Step One: Pull up and grab rouge item to be removed

Step Two: Release and study item (ignoring parents as they cheer)

Step Three: Repeat until all magnets are on the floor
